Anti-wrinkle injections: what actually varies between the options

If you’ve started looking into anti-wrinkle injections, you’ve probably worked out that there is more than one product available. People often arrive having read about a particular one and ask for it by name. It is a reasonable question, but it usually isn’t the most useful one, because which product suits you is a clinical decision rather than a menu choice.
What they have in common
Every anti-wrinkle injectable works in the same fundamental way. Each one temporarily reduces the activity of the specific muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, the lines that form when you frown, squint, or raise your brows. With that muscle activity eased, existing lines soften and the repeated creasing that deepens them over time is reduced.
None of them should leave your face immobile when they are dosed appropriately. Our approach is to preserve your natural expression while softening the lines, so you look rested rather than treated.
Where the differences sit
The distinctions between products come down to formulation. That affects a few practical things:
- Onset, meaning how soon you begin to notice the effect settling in
- Duration, meaning how long the effect is maintained before movement gradually returns
- Spread, meaning how the product behaves in the tissue around the injection point, which matters a great deal in smaller or more delicate areas
These differences are real, but they are also modest, and they interact with your own physiology. Two people given the same product in the same area can have quite different experiences of onset and duration. Muscle strength, metabolism, treatment history, and the area being treated all play a part.
Why the choice is made in the room
Anti-wrinkle injectables are prescription medicines. That means a prescriber has to assess you, take a proper medical history, and select and dose the product for your particular situation. It isn’t something that can responsibly be decided from a website, including this one.
What we can tell you is how we approach it. We start conservatively, because it is straightforward to add a little more at review and impossible to remove product that has already been placed. We book a review at two weeks, once the effect has fully settled, and adjust from there. If you are new to injectables, that first cycle is as much about learning how your face responds as it is about the result itself.
When it isn’t the right treatment
Anti-wrinkle injections address lines caused by movement. If your main concern is lines visible when your face is completely at rest, or skin that has lost density and quality, muscle relaxants alone will disappoint you. Those concerns usually need treatments that work on the skin itself. We would rather tell you that at consultation than have you spend money on the wrong thing.
If you would like to talk through the options properly, book a consultation and we will assess your face, discuss your goals, and recommend what genuinely suits you.
